What is The Children's Village Doing in Iraq?

The Children's Village is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Dobbs Ferry, which serves New York's most vulnerable children and families.

In June, CV staff and volunteers embarked upon a fifth training mission to Iraq to help local NGOs deal with the critical needs of an estimated 2 million orphans in this war-torn country.  Our team  heard heart-breaking stories of tragedy and loss along with tales of hope, love, and resilience. One couple is caring for 12 children--their own and the children of several relatives who were killed.

The project started in 2009 when CV was invited by the Sponsor Iraqi Children's Foundation and the Government of Iraq to help the country's mental health professional deal with the trauma of war. Since then we have partnered with the Iraqi Health Aid Organization and worked with the Iraqi Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and local NGOs, training on such topics as child development, client engagement, and self care.

We will continue to work with our partners on the ground in Iraq and explore ways that we can support children in the region.
