Choose Your Child's Adventure: Local Summer Camps

Registration has already begun for the 2011 summer camp season.

When I was a child, my parents used to threaten that if I didn't choose a summer camp or program by April, I'd have to sit and watch the grass grow for eight weeks. For Rivertowns residents, there are so many options it's hard to keep them straight—and hard to know which one is right. We've provided a list of local options for the 2011 season. Please feel free to post your impressions of these camps or others we may have missed in the comments section below. 

Village and District-Run Camps and Programs:

Ardsley Day Camp

Location: Ardsley Middle School

Dates: June 28-Aug. 5

Activities include swimming, sports, arts and crafts and games.  All programs are run by certified teachers. Early registration is strongly recommended. Ardsley Day Camp is open to both students of the Ardsley School District and students from outside the district. See their brochure here

Dobbs Ferry Recreation Summer Programs

Location: Various locales within Dobbs Ferry

Dates: Some programs begin Jun. 29, others July 5

Programs include: basketball camp (Aug. 15 to 19), summer magic day camp for juniors (pre-k and entering kindergarten) , seniors (-age) and teens (grades 6-9) and an after-camp program from 3-6 p.m.  There is also an early-riser program from 7:30-9 .m. for children enrolled in the summer day camp. Registration for teen camp begins on April 2 and for all other camps on April 11. Brochures will be sent to district families shortly.

Irvington Recreation Summer Programs

Dates: June 30-Aug. 5

Early registration for this program for children aged 3 through 8th grade is on Wednesdays, April 6, 13 and 27 from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, April 30 from 10:30am-12:30pm. Find more information and learn about their teen camp—"Teenscape"—here.

Hastings Recreation Summer Programs

Dates: Jun 27 - Aug. 5

Location: Hillside, Hastings High School

All regular programs will be held in 2011. The Early Learning Camp is for children entering Kindergarten and is held at. The Hillside Day Camp is for children entering 1st through 6th grades and is held at Hillside Elementary School.

The Sports Camp is for children entering 4th through 8th grades and is held at . The Hillside Combination Camp is for children entering 4th through 6th grade; children go to Sports Camp in the morning and Hillside Day Camp in the afternoon. If you have any questions about the camp, contact Lisa O' Reilly at 478-2380, ext. 642 or LOReilly@hastingsgov.org.

Other Local Camps and Programs

RiverArts Summer Arts Workshops:

This series of programs is held at the end of August, when most other camps have ended. Summer Arts is organized as a series of multi-disciplinary workshops for children entering grades 3 to 9 who have a keen interest in the visual and performing arts. The program is staffed by artists from the visual and performing fields who are committed to their art and working with young people. Learn more information here
