Celebrate 'Diwali' Festival of Lights Friday in Hastings

Chutney Masala Chef/Owner Navjot Arora said the restaurant decided to hold a party before Diwali so it could accommodate customers who traditionally gather at home on Diwali with relatives and friends.

Having restaurants with such varied cultural and national origins allows Rivertowns residents to celebrate year-round!

Diwali, the Indian 'festival of lights,' will be observed on Oct. 26 this year, but Irvington's Chutney Masala will celebrate early with a pre-holiday party on Friday at the Riverview in Hastings.

"We decided to have this party five days before Diwali because most people who celebrate puja do it at home with relatives and friends," chef/owner Navjot Arora explained.

He also mentioned that, "Diwali will be observed at the restaurant on Oct. 26 with an opening prayer followed by the lighting of a Dieali diya—a ghee (clarified butter) fired lamp."

Hostess Anu Arora will visit tables to wish customers a happy and prosperous Diwali.

The 18-course buffet spread planned for the Oct. 21 party will be accompanied by an open bar, a drawing with gift cards as prizes and entertainment and music provided by DJ Z. "Johnny Walker Black will be the drink of choice," said Arora.

The party at the Riverview on Oct. 21 starts at 7:30 pm. The cost of admission is $35 for adults and $15 for children, ages 5-12. Reservations are recommended but Arora said that walk-ins would be accommodated if room is available (payment will be accepted at the door).
