D. Thomas Fine Miniatures Opens Hastings-on-Hudson Store

Beautiful things come in small packages. And D. Thomas Fine Miniatures proves it! Hastings-on-Hudson has just welcomed a unique new storefront devoted to the fine art of miniatures turning our ideas of what dollhouse furniture is on its head.

D. Thomas Fine Miniatures is a retail destination featuring artisan dollhouses and top quality collectibles including 1/12” scale furniture and accessories. The store offers DIY workshops and classes taught by master artists and craftsmen in the field. The concept, designed to appeal to collectors, crafters and enthusiasts at all skill levels and abilities, was created, in part, to raise awareness of miniatures as a decorative art form and to introduce the discipline not only to a new generation but to those who may just be discovering it. The shop also features a gallery space showcasing works in miniature by well-known artisans from all over the world.

Although miniatures formally began as an art form 700 years ago, they were first discovered thousands of years ago in drawings on rocks and ancient Egyptian papyrus manuscripts. In the 16th century the art of miniature painting was introduced to England. Portrait miniatures became widely popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, allowing people to own portable versions of a loved one long before photography. The miniatures of then and now require a meticulous approach to detail and a great deal of patience on the part of the artist.

Today, some people fill entire rooms of their home with miniature marvels of fine art from commercial stores like D. Thomas Miniatures.

The store is the dream of miniature expert Darren Scala who says, “There is seduction in scale that transcends time. Miniatures truly capture the imagination and provide opportunity to dream, discover and explore.”
