For over two centuries, European composers were given
preferential treatment over Americans, but that trend has finally turned itself around. Music lovers will be given a rare opportunity to hear America’s first large-scale choral and orchestral work: the Mass in D by the US composer John Knowles Paine. On Saturday, May 5, 2012, at 8:00 pm, Hudson Chorale will be bringing this Civil War-era masterpiece to the Irvington High School Auditorium on 40 North Broadway, Irvington, NY. Being the largest semi-professional chorus in Westchester, hudson Chorale is uniquely suited to introduce this masterpiece to audiences seeking to broaden their musical experiences.
Composed between 1861 and 1866, it was first performed in the US in 1868. While owing some stylistic depth to german composers such as Beethoven and Handel, it contains stunning originality and romantic splendor that was unparalleled until Verdi composed his Requiem a full ten years later. Michael Conley, Music Director, and the 80-voice chorus are excited to honor a great American composer by presenting his Mass in D with full orchestra
