No other band sound like Timbila! The surreal buzzing beauty of timbila (Chopi xylophone, Mozambique) and hypnotic dream melodies of mbira (Shona thumb piano, Zimbabwe) soar with stinging guitar riffs and sassy celestial vocals in grooves that are deeply funky, fierce and danceable.
PRECONCERT DEMONSTRATION AND DISCUSSION: 7 – 7:30PM, “Rocking Traditional Culture”, led by Nora Balaban of Timbila and Banning Eyre, Afropop Worldwide Senior Producer and author, on how Timbila adapts the traditional music & culture of Mozambique and Zimbabwe in a rock context. In this workshop, they will discuss and demonstrate what they learned in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Mali, Ghana and elsewhere. They will also deconstruct some of the songs they perform with the group Timbila, explaining some of the techniques they use to develop new sounds based on ancient traditions. The session will leave room for questions and back and forth with the audience.
