Fewer MTA Trains On New Haven Line Starting Monday

The MTA will be reducing their New Haven line service by 10 percent beginning Monday.

Beginning on Monday, Feb. 7, the Metro North New Haven line will be running on a reduced schedule.  The schedule will continue through Mar. 4 and will reduce peak service in the morning and evening by 10 percent, according to the MTAwebsite.

The weekends will not fare any better, with both Saturday and Sunday running on a Sunday schedule beginning this Saturday, Feb. 5.

According to MTA President Howard Permut, there are close to 150 New Haven Line cars—40 percent of the total cars—out of service on a daily basis.  With 70 percent of the fleet over 40 years old and a significant portion of the infrastructure over a century old, many of the cars are simply ill-equipped to deal with extended periods of cold and snow.

The MTA anticipates the arrival of new M8 rail cars soon—the exact number is unknown—but expect these to be put to use sometime in the first quarter of 2011.
