On Wednesday evening seventh-grade students at , parents, and teachers, gathered in the Irvington MS/HS auditorium to view the movie premiere of student-made public service announcements.
In collaboration with Jacob Burns Film Center with a grant from the Irvington Education Foundation, Irvington Middle School utilized a program called "Reel Change" which provides opportunities for students to use multi-media to effect social change.
Student groups brainstormed, storyboarded, filmed and edited PSA’s based on prevalent social issues in their lives. Topics such as bullying, eating disorders, caring for the environment, shoplifting, and making the “good” choices were expressed through the PSA’s messages. The Jacob Burns Film Center’s creative staff offered students their insight and facilities as they helped bring awareness of various film making and editing techniques.

Students employed a multitude of persuasive strategies with the hope of evoking a change in thinking towards their chosen social issues. The work was aligned with the new Common Core Learning Standards and incorporated the work we have done at IMS with character building. The evening was a huge success as parents got a first-hand look at the students’ creative efforts and media savvy.
