In Photos: Dobbs Ferry Pays Tribute to Victims of 9/11

Ten years later, residents and community leaders honor the memory of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

As a paramedic for the Fire Department of New York, Neil Sweeting was among the many first responders who rushed to the Twin Towers before they collapsed. Last night, he fought back tears as he spoke of his former colleague Douglas Miller, a Dobbs Ferry and FDNY firefighter who lost his life that day.

Sweeting, now first assistant chief of the Dobbs Ferry Fire Department, was among the community leaders who spoke a service Sunday in observance of the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

At dusk, community members gathered at the 9/11 memorial at Waterfront Park to share their memories and urge others to keep the memory of that day alive.

"I fear at times that this day is slowly slipping out of the minds of people," Sweeting said. "But I pray that we never forget."

In her reflections, Maryellen Laino remembered her first husband, who died in the Twin Towers. They had three young children.

"Tim Stout was a different kind of hero," she said. "He was a loving famly man. He worked on the 103rd floor of the World Trade Center simply so he could get home to dinner by 6 o'clock."

Laino thanked the community for coming to her aid after 9/11. "You raked our leaves, and you shoveled our snow — and you prayed," she said.

After the ceremony, members of the Dobbs Ferry Fire Department gathered at the plaque and tree planted in Miller's memory for a short ceremony.
