With more than 1,200 new students projected to enter the Yonkers School District in 2015-16, Superintendent Dr. Michael Yazurlo is recommending a $62 million jump in spending to hire hundreds of educators.

In his proposed budget, Yazurlo hopes to add 384 positions, including 28 new guidance counselors and 28 new social workers, 46 new special education teachers and 31 secondary school teachers. The proposed budget must still receive city approval.

Budget cuts in recent years have led to dozens of lost positions through the district. Yazurlo is recommending the district spend a total of $584.9 million for the 2015-16 school year, of which almost half of the money comes from the state. The proposed figure represents an increase of nearly 12 percent.

Yazurlo also hopes to add 20 school psychologists, 21 public safety officers, 26 reading teachers and 16 bilingual teachers, among others.

“To realize the vision for Yonkers students, we must ask ‘why not’?” said Yazurlo in a statement.
