UPDATE: Drag Racing Contributed to Fatal Saw Mill Crash, Say Cops

The accident occurred in Dobbs Ferry at the Ashford Avenue Bridge.

This story was updated at 1:43 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2014: Westchester County police believe the crash that killed a 21-year-old West Harrison man early Wednesday was the result of drag racing, according to reports.

The man’s identity has not yet been released, but he died when his car veered off the exit ramp of the Saw Mill River Parkway in Dobbs Ferry. WABC-TV reported that a police officer witnessed cars slowing down traffic prior to the crash in a manner that indicated a race was about to start. The crash occurred at about 12:10 a.m.

According to The Journal News, the victim’s car, a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, crashed through an 18-inch concrete barrier and “plunged” 20 feet, crashing into a tree.

Police know the identities of the drivers involved in the alleged drag race and charges may be filed, writes JN reporters James O’Rourke and Thane Grauel.

Original story: An early morning accident on the Saw Mill River Parkway Wednesday claimed the life of the driver when he drove off the exit ramp in Dobbs Ferry at the Ashford Avenue Bridge, according to reports.

The accident occurred just after midnight, and the man’s identity had not yet been released. County officials were scheduled to hold a press conference Wednesday to discuss the crash.

According to News 12 Westchester, the driver - the only person in the vehicle - was traveling northbound in a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro when he got off at the exit, hit the bridge on the opposite side, bounced off and veered off the road on the other side.
