More Details On Double Fatal Sprain Brook Parkway Accident Released

Police said the vehicle was going at a high rate of speed.

GREENBURGH, NY — More information was released about a one-car accident Thursday on the Sprain Brook Parkway that took the lives of two men.

State Police said the accident happened around 12:18 p.m. Thursday in the area of Mile Post Marker 4.9, southbound.

A preliminary investigation found that a 1998 Honda Civic, driven by James P. Campion, 26, of White Plains, was “traveling southbound at a high rate of speed.”

His passenger was Pedro O. Mattos, 21, of Mount Vernon.

Police said Campion attempted to get around another vehicle at which time he lost control of the car, striking the guide rail and then a tree.

Campion was pronounced dead at the scene by the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office. Mattos was taken to the Westchester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

Greenbugh Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene. State Police were assisted by the Town of Greenburgh Police Department, City of White Plains Police Department and the City of Mount Vernon Police Department.
