No New Anchorages Sites For Now, Coast Guard Says

The Coast Guard said it needs more time to assess the risks and resolve the issue.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — It seems that for the time being there will be no additional commercial anchorage sites on the Hudson River between Yonkers and Kingston. The U.S. Coast Guard Tuesday issued its report on the Hudson River Ports and Waterways Safety Assessment which determined that allowing the new anchorage sites was not agreed upon.

Scenic Hudson said that the report said that no decision has been made as to whether the Coast Guard will in the future push for additional anchorage sites, MidHudsonNews.com reported.

The 77-page report also said that more time is needed to resolve the issue and assess the risks, the Daily Freeman said, and doesn’t say when there will be a final decision.

The Coast Guard wanted to create 10 new anchorage grounds in the Hudson River, which would have enabled up to 43 petroleum-carrying vessels to anchor in the 91-mile area. Forty-two of them would have been able to anchor for up to 30 days at a time.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation in October to allow New York to set guidelines for “tanker avoidance zones” and to establish minimum conditions under which tankers are allowed to navigate on the river.
