NYPD Detective Killed in Wrong-Way Sprain Brook Crash

The seriously injured other driver also has been identified.

The driver killed early Friday in the wrong-way, two-car crash on the Sprain Brook Parkway was an off-duty New York Police Department detective, according to state police.

Det. Paul E. Duncan was 46 years old and lived in Hartsdale. He was a Detective 1st Grade, assigned to NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau.

The crash occurred at about 4 a.m. in the southbound lane of Sprain Brook near Route 100B in Greenburgh. A 2013 Honda Civic, driven by 20-year-old Yonkers resident Efren Moreano, was traveling northbound - the wrong direction - when it slammed head-on into the detective’s 2011 Honda Pilot.

The detective was killed, and Moreano was seriously injured; he was taken to Westchester County Medical Center and was listed in stable condition, according to state police. Earlier in the day, state police said he had been placed in a medically induced coma, but whether he remains in one was not disclosed.

Alcohol, and possibly marijuana, may have been factors in the crash, according to WCBS-TV.
