The Significance of the Magna Carta: Lecture by Walter Johanson
Magna Carta; Charter of Liberties; rights of Barons; limitations on taxation; unlawful imprisonment

800 years ago, the first Magna Carta was reluctantly signed by the English King John at Runnymede. Walter Johanson, retired Mount Vernon Social Studies teacher, will role-play the part of Stephen Langton, the Pope-appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, who motivated English Barons to curb the King’s power.
Johanson will explain the Magna Carta’s far-reaching influence on the rights of the individual, and how it led to the wording of the U.S. Constitution.
