12 People Out Of Homes After Fire At Hempstead Multi-Family House, NCFM Says
The Nassau County Fire Marshal's office says a fire at a 2.5 story house took almost two hours to extinguish Wednesday.
HEMPSTEAD, NY — A fire burned for almost two hours at a two-and-a-half story house in Hempstead Wednesday, leaving a dozen people without a home to return to Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office said Hempstead firefighters responded to an 8:26 a.m. call for a fire at a Maryland Avenue home, finding upon arrival that the fire was burning on the house’s second floor and in the attic.
Mutual aid from Elmont, Franklin Square Munson, Freeport, Garden City, North Bellmore, Rockville Centre, South Hempstead, Uniondale, Westbury and West Hempstead departments brought the total firefighting presence at the house to 75 firefighters, officials said. Despite the large presence, the fire still took an hour and 50 minutes to extinguish, officials said. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported in the fire extinguishing effort, officials said.

While there were no injuries, there was still damage; officials said the fire rendered the home uninhabitable for the 10 adults and two children who live there.
The red cross was contacted to help the displaced people, while the house is being investigated by the local building department, the fire marshal’s office and the NCPD arson/bomb squad to determine the extent of damage and the cause of the fire, officials said.
