Burning Smell From NJ Scrap Yard Fire Drifts Into Nassau County

The blaze started at Port Newark Monday night. Do you smell it?

OCEANSIDE, NY — Residents may have smelled something unpleasant on Tuesday morning. It appears to be connected to a large scrap yard fire in Newark.

The Oceanside Fire Department posted on its Facebook page:

"We are aware of the strong smell of plastic/electrical burning throughout the town and entire area."

The department said weather conditions are "sending the smoke directly over the city and Nassau County."

However, Nassau County police, as of noon on Tuesday, did not receive any calls questioning the smell. There were numerous people taking to social media wondering about the odor.

New York City's emergency management Twitter account posted overnight about the fire and that residents in Manhattan and The Bronx could see or smell smoke.

The fire started on a heap of metal Monday evening. Dozens of firefighters were battling the fire.
