Fire Tears Through Freeport Gas Station

A fire tore through a Freeport gas station and injured three workers Tuesday morning, according to multiple reports.

The fire broke out at around 10 a.m. at Gulf Gas Station at W. Sunrise Highway and N. Long Beach Avenue, said Freeport Mayor Robert T. Kennedy in a statement, according to the Freeport Leader.

Freeport, Baldwin, Oceanside and Merrick firefighters tacked the blaze, which destroyed several cars on the property, according to the report. Bellmore-Merrick Volunteer Ambulance Corp. also assisted in the emergency.

Three remediation workers, who were at the shuttered station extracting gas from tanks, were injured in the fire and are in critical but stable condition, a Nassau University Medical Center spokeswoman said, according to Newsday. The victims were reportedly seen running from the scene and tearing off burning clothing.

“It was terrifying,” said Lauren McLellan, a receptionist for nearby Heritage Jaguar, according to the report.

One firefighter was also treated for dehydration, according to Kennedy’s statement.

The fire is being investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal and the Nassau County Police Department.
