Four Things You Can Do To Take Good Care Of Your Teeth From The Smilist

Dr. Thomas J. Filip from the Smilist shares key steps you can take to maintain good oral health.

Brush

Brush two to three times a day using a power toothbrush. People generally achieve better results with a power toothbrush than with a manual toothbrush. Most power toothbrushes have a timer that encourages people to brush for the fully recommended two minutes--this may be the reason for the better results.

Use a fluoride toothpaste that has the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. The seal assures that the toothpaste has been evaluated for safety and efficacy by an objective scientific panel.

In addition to fluoride, the most effective toothpastes contain triclosan or stannous fluoride. Studies show that using a toothpaste containing either of these active ingredients reduces the incidence of gingivitis, a reversible inflammation of gum tissue.

Floss

Think of brushing as cleaning two of the four sides of our teeth and flossing as cleaning the remaining third and fourth sides. Brushing does half the job and flossing does the second half of the job. Flossing, at least once a day, is essential for removing plaque that accumulates between our teeth and below our gums – places our toothbrush can’t reach.

Rinse

Rinse at least once daily with a mouthwash that contains four essential oils: eucalyptol, menthol, methyl salicylate and thymol. The secret is that brushing and rinsing is almost as good as brushing and flossing. And doing all three is better than doing just two.

Regular Dental Visits

Regular dental visits help identify problems early when treatment is likely to be simpler and more affordable. They also help prevent many problems from developing in the first place. Visiting a dentist, such as ones at the Smilist, regularly is key to maintaining good oral health.

Dr. Filip is the Clinical Director at the Smilist where his mission is to support each of our doctors as they provide the highest quality care for our patients.
