LI Hospital Makes Top 60 Pancreatic Cancer Facilities In The U.S.
The National Pancreas Foundation awarded just 13 hospitals in New York with the pancreatic cancer honor given to the Oceanside hospital.

OCEANSIDE, NY. — Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital has joined a list of just 60 hospitals nationwide and 13 in the state of New York, being named a National Pancreas Foundation Pancreatic Cancer Center of Excellence.
The designation, announced Mar. 9, is given in recognition of the way Mount Sinai South Nassau treats pancreatic cancer, specifically highlighting institutions that use a multidisciplinary approach.
As far as what that approach looks like, hospital officials said it involves, “treating the ‘whole patient’ with a focus on the best possible outcomes and an improved quality of life.”

“This designation results from our singular focus on advancing health care for the communities we serve,” Mount Sinai South Nassau president Dr. Adhi Sharma said. “I am proud of our teamwork and collaboration that is centered on providing our patients with standard-setting medical care.”
The criteria used to select pancreatic cancer centers of excellence include the presence of specialized physicians including gastroenterologists, pancreatic surgeons, interventional radiologists and others, as well as patient advocates and other patient support programs.

For Dr. Ganesh Gunasekaran, Chief of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Services at Mount Sinai South Nassau's Liver, Bile Duct and Pancreas Surgery Program, the award is an important recognition for a program that treats pancreatic cancer, complex benign tumors, malignant cancers and other disorders of the liver, gallbladder, bile duct, and pancreas with patient-specific treatment plans.
“Center of Excellence designation reflects our commitment to working across specialties to identify the optimal treatment for each patient with pancreatic cancer or other hepatobiliary diseases,” Gunasekaran said. “We are truly committed to creating an environment of excellence in patient care and innovation at Mount Sinai South Nassau.”
