No. 98 — Watch a Movie at the Fantasy Theater

Skip the mall and catch a movie at the oldest–and only–theater in the village.

The next Rockville Centre staple is the village's one and only movie theater: the , located on North Park Avenue.

The oldest theater in the area, the Fantasy first opened its doors to the public in 1929 as a single screen theater, then owned by the Century Theaters chain. Representing a slice of local history, the theater is mentioned in Doris Kearns Goodwin's book, "Wait Till Next Year" about growing up in Rockville Centre in the 50s.

It has since gone through several renovations, including one in the 80's that made it into its current structure and layout: a nondesript, run-of-the-mill American movie theater. Now complete with five screens, the two-story theater is owned by AMC and shows today's most popular films.

If the movies are part of your Valentine's Day plans, give Roosevelt Fields Mall the slip and instead checkout the Fantasy 5, if not for the asthetics, then for the historical value. If you're somehow roped into Justin Bieber's 3-D extravaganza "Never Say Never," you might as well see it at a place that's been around for 80 years, right?
