NYAW Announces Scholarship Award to Oceanside High School Student

Alexander Avila Receives $3,000 Scholarship to Pursue His Career in Environmental Science

Oceanside, N.Y. (August 24, 2020) - Through its partnership with the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC-NY), New York American Water recently awarded Alexander Avila of Oceanside High School a $3,000 scholarship. This marks the ninth consecutive year that New York American Water has offered scholarships to high school students within its service area to pursue higher education in a field that can make a difference in the water industry.

“We congratulate Alexander on all of his achievements both in the classroom as well as in the community,” said Lynda DiMenna, President of New York American Water. “We wish him the best of luck as he continues his education and pursues a career to better our environment.”

Alexander graduated from Oceanside High School this past June and is one of seven award recipients this year. He will be attending SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry this fall and will be majoring in Environmental Science.

While a student at Oceanside High School, Alexander excelled in the classroom. Not only did Alexander earn high grades throughout his courses, he was also involved in various clubs such as the C.A.R.E. Club, of which he was a board member, as well as the treasurer of the Latino Culture Club. Off campus, Alexander volunteers at his church as an usher and is a volunteer tutor at the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre.
