RVC Voters Head to the Polls

Coordinators say residents have come in droves to vote; new voting machines experiencing few problems.

According to poll coordinators at the village's voting locales, more than a thousand residents have voted in this year's election as of 2:30 p.m., and they only expect more to trickle in after this evening's rush hour.

At , coordinator Kathi Collins said the new voting machines have experienced few problems, but some older voters are having issues with them. "The older residents are a little grumpy about it," Collins said. "Some told me it's OK, but they miss the old way."

She added that one of the new voting machines had some trouble receiving ballots, and they had to be fed in four or five times before it worked properly. Another issue voters had, Collins explained, was that the machine's screen lighting was too dim.  "The lighting was horrendous," she said. "It definitely wasn't working right."

Village resident Karen Bagnall said this was her first time using the new machines, but it was pretty straightforward. "It was pretty easy to use, but I thought the print was too small," Bagnall said.

At , coordinator Gina Joachim said that one of the voting scanners was down and they had to call the Board of Elections to fix it. Besides that, she said, the overall process has gone smoothly. "We've been really busy," she said. "But that's a good thing."

John Villanueva, a resident who voted at, said he thought the new system was working well, but hoped that after submitting his ballot, it would allow him to double check his votes on the screen. "It's definitely quicker than the levers," Villanueva said. "I just thought that your votes should pop up on the screen so you could confirm that everything was right."

Polls are open until 9 a.m. If you need any information on this year's candidates, check out our
