WATCH: Veteran Discharged From Hospital After 110-Day COVID Fight

Leonardo Gonzalez spent 110 days at Mercy Medical Center fighting and recovering from the coronavirus.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — After nearly four full months in the hospital battling and recovering from the coronavirus, Leonardo Gonzalez was finally discharged from Mercy Medical Center on Monday.

Gonzalez, 70, is a Marine Corps veteran and retired auxiliary police officer from Hempstead. He was first admitted to Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre on March 24 due to the coronavirus. He was transferred to the hospital's rehab unit on June 2. He spent 110 days at the hospital.

His wife, Delia, was also admitted to the hospital with coronavirus on the same day he was. She was discharged after 45 days. Both Leonard and Delia had severe cases of the virus and both had to be intubated.

“They saved my life,” said Gonzalez of Mercy's medical staff. “God bless the doctors, nurses, therapist and everyone at the hospital. Thank you for making me feel good again.”

Delia and two of their five children were present at the hospital on Monday to pick Gonzalez up and take him home.

“When my mom finally came home that was the biggest step for us,” said daughter Yamilet Rivera. “The staff communicated with us every day so we knew my dad’s day would come soon. We are so grateful for the support both my parents received along the way.”
