Iranian Hackers Gained Access to Rye Dam in 2013: WSJ

The incident received national attention behind the scenes.

Iranian hackers breached the security safeguards of the control system of the Bowman Avenue Dam in Rye in 2013, a stark wake up call to the Department of Homeland Security in United States’ efforts to fight cyber warfare.

The Wall Street Journal wrote about the infiltration in an article Sunday, reporting that the hackers did not take over control of the dam, which was built in the 1950s and helps mitigate flooding. Instead, the hackers studied the system and its operation.

Officials at The White House were made aware of the breach, and FBI agents even paid a visit to Rye City offices to briefly discuss the incident, according to City Manager Marcus Serrano.
