Rye Fire Department Takes Advantage Of Arctic Blast To Train In Ice And Cold Water Rescues

There's no substitute for experiencing real world extreme conditions and Rye firefighters took the plunge this week.

On Monday, Rye Firefighters participated in Ice/Cold-Water Rescue Training.

Although it wasn't cold enough for ice, this training provided members with techniques on self and victim rescue from the shore, and sending a rescuer into the water.

Firefighters reviewed the effects of cold water on victims and proper first aid for cold weather environments. Using specialized cold water suits that protect the rescuer from the harsh weather, firefighters practiced several scenario based ice/cold-water rescue exercises.
