Rye Running Club To Host Speaker Event

The in-store event will feature a talk on injuries

Dr. Josef Geldwert will appear at the May 1 to talk about avoiding injuries while running.

“We’re looking to provide a service to the community,” said Steven Gates, of the Rye Running Company. “We sometimes get people come to the store asking about injuries, so we thought it’d be nice to try and talk with them about injuries before they actually get them.”

The free talk is Tuesday May 1 at 7 p.m. at the store, located at 37 Purchase Street, and is the first of what Gates said should be more in-store events.

“We’re hoping to maybe have something once a month in the store,” he said, adding it could be things like more speaker events, or shoe companies coming in to talk about their products.

The store also holds two weekly group runs that leave from the store as well. The runs are on Wednesday and Saturday each week, with the Wednesday run starting at 7:15 a.m. and Saturday’s starting at 8:30 a.m. Both of those are free as well.

Gates said the group runs throughout Rye, usually heading toward Playland, but he added that they try to run different routes. On Saturdays, the store actually offers two different runs, with one a shorter distance.

“Some people want to run like five or six miles, but others just run about three or four,” he said. “It usually depends on how many people show up and who is there.”

He said the Wednesday morning runs have about four or five people on average while the Saturday runs get closer to around 11 runners or so.

Gates added that people can get to the store early to stretch out a bit before the run, and they can leave things in the store while they go out on the run.
