STEER FOR STUDENT ATHLETES HOSTS SPRING CELEBRATION DINNER HONORING FIVE DISTINGUISHED STUDENTS AND SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SENIOR WRITER ALEX WOLFF -FIVE STEER STUDENTS GRADUATE CLASS of 2016-

Rye Brook, NY, April 8, 2016~Steer for Student Athletes, a non-profit organization, is committed to providing funding and services for their candidates to achieve better personal development and educational outcomes through athletic participation. On May 20, Steer for Student Athletes will hold a Spring Celebration Dinner at Hilton Westchester, 699 Westchester Avenue, Rye Brook, NY from 7-10 pm. Students, their families and growing network of supporters will honor five graduating students and feature special guest and Sports Illustrated Senior Writer, Alex Wolff.

Steer has launched a significant capital campaign to support having 100 student ath- letes successfully participate in the program across multiple schools in some of the largest and most challenged public school districts in the country by 2020.

The Steer program in collaboration with Alex Wolff hopes to inspire and educate many on the pressing problem in the school systems today. Alex Wolff’s 2011 SI Ar- ticle, “Sports Saves the World,” has served as the inspiration for, and motive behind, the Steer For Student Athletes concept. Having researched, visited and witnessed the impact of sport in education, Wolff will address the students and supporters and hopes to convey the value of Steer for Student Athletes mission.

Alex has been a writer for Sports Illustrated since 1980. In addition to covering bas- ketball at all levels, he has written from the Olympics, soccer’s World Cup,the World Series, every Grand Slam tennis event, and the Tour de France.

SI Story assignments have taken Wolff to six continents and to such countries as China, Cuba, Iran and Russia and dealt with issues at the intersection of sport and society as race, gender, style, the environment, drugs, education, law, business, conflict, ethics and culture.

Michael Eck, Steer for Student Athletes Executive Director and Co-Founder, says, “My involvement in being a founding member of STEER evolved from my passion for sports, knowing what a positive impact it has had in my own personal develop- ment. We have proven that the model for STEER works but we also know that we are only as good as our students. This is a 100% collaborative effort and while we are proud of our model; the onus is on our students. We look forward to meeting the challenge of our 2020 goals and with the help of our local communities, I am very confident that we will succeed.”

Steer for Student Athletes co-founded in 2012 by Kevin O’Callaghan and Joe Durney, based their model on the simple principle, “pay it forward.” Steer is deeply committed to provide funding and support services for their candidates to assist students to graduate high school, prepare for further education, and/or entry into the workplace. The organization employs “Steer Advisors” who are responsible for tracking the needs of the student athletes, allowing them to assess their current approach and develop a plan that will help them achieve success.
