1 Brookhaven Beach Remains Closed, While Another Included For 4th Time In Shutdown Due To Unsafe Bacteria:

RONKONKOMA, NY — Brookhaven beaches were two of three closed across Suffolk County on Tuesday to bathing due to findings of bacterial levels exceeding acceptable criteria, the the Department of Health Services said.

Bayberry Cove Beach remained closed Tuesday, while Ronkonkoma Beach joined the list. Tanner Park in Copiague also remained closed.

Ronkonkoma Beach has now been closed four times this summer.

Bathing was suspended at Bayberry Cove Beach last week, as one of 21 beaches in Brookhaven Town.

The beaches will reopen when further testing reveals the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

The county's Department of Health Services Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott advises bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
