Would you like to read books or watch movies in your native tongue, or practice reading in a foreign language? Your Library has a collection of popular titles in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. The World Language Collection is located against the wall on the upper level of the main stacks, just past the biography section. Foreign language children’s books are shelved to the left of the entrance to the Children’s Department.
Trying to learn a foreign language? You can access two different online language learning programs from the Library's website. Mango Languages provides step-by-step language immersion training in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian, Greek, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese, as well as English as a Second Language courses for Polish, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese speakers. BYKI, or Before You Know It, is a friendly, personalized, basic language learning system that uses online flashcards to teach you words and phrases in over 50 languages, as well as English for speakers of ten different native languages.
If you prefer traditional language-learning books and audio CDs, you will find materials for over 30 languages in the lower-level nonfiction stacks in the 400s. Here you will also find full Mango Language courses on USB Drives, for those who would like to try the Mango program without Internet access. Additional English language-learning books and CDs are located in the ESOL section outside the tutorial rooms in the reference area.
