LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY — The Sachem Central School District will be closed the upcoming week amid concerns over the spread of the new coronavirus, Superintendent Kenneth Graham announced Saturday. There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 among students or staff as of Saturday, Graham said. The decision came after consultation with district administrators and the Board of Education.

"As the evolution of COVID-19 continues to progress at a rapid rate across our region and beyond, we are undoubtedly all facing very stressful times as this affects so many aspects of our daily lives," Graham wrote in a letter to the Sachem community.

All events will be canceled, including athletics, and there will be no use of district facilities during the closure. Any extension of the closure will be communicated to parents. If the district remains closed further than this week, schools will provide resources for activities and lessons for students at home.

"I also would like to thank our custodial and maintenance staff for the incredible work that they have done thoroughly cleaning our buildings over the past 36 hours," Graham said.

The district will continue to remain in contact with the Suffolk County Department of Health Services and other agencies, according to Graham.

"Please know the health and safety of our students and staff are at the forefront for
us all," Graham wrote. "Since this is an unprecedented situation for all school districts, I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. Any changes to this plan will be communicated to our families. I will continue to keep you informed of new developments that affect our school community."

All schools in Nassau County were closed for two weeks due to the coronavirus, County Executive Laura Curran announced Sunday morning.
