Bystanders pulled the man from the water, but an officer had to wade out to retrieve the pooch, cops say.

RONKONKOMA, NY — A man and his dog were rescued from the frigid water of Lake Ronkonkoma through the combined efforts of a group of good Samaritans and Emergency Services Unit officers on Sunday morning, Suffolk police said.

A 911 caller reported a man and a dog in the lake around 10 a.m., but by the time they had arrived, bystanders had helped the man, according to police.

One officer went into the water and got a hold of the dog, while a second used a rope to pull the two in to safety, police said, adding that the man was evaluated at the scene by the Lakeland Fire Department.
