Incoming Freshman At Sachem Promoting New Films

Ninth-grader starting at Sachem North writes and directs independent film, produces another.

An incoming student at Sachem North High School will begin the school year finding out if his independent film "Dear Mom" will win at the All-American High School Film Festival when winners are announced September 2.

Jordan Walters, who starts the 9th grade at North in a few weeks, also contributed to a documentary film on YouTube entrepreneurs, with a producing credit.

"The documentary shows how YouTube has changed peoples' lives, created jobs, and is many peoples' full time job," Walters describes in an email. "The trailer just came out today and we need at least 100,000 thumbs up all together."

The documentary trailer is embedded in this story. Patch had an email conversation with Walters, who explains how he got into film and how he plans to spend his career at Sachem North.

On how he got his start:
It's something I have grown up doing. My brother and I have been making movies since I was 5. My brother is now going to Baruch college and is minoring in film. When he was editing the little movies that we made I I learned how he was doing it and by the time I was 8 I was editing on iMovie. So by now I have learned much more complicated and more professional programs such as Final Cut Pro X. So it hasn't always been what I've wanted to do until the past two years and now I am in love with it and it's my passion.

His favorite film:
I would say my favorite movie would be Reservoir Dogs. Reservoir Dogs shows a crime scene just like in any movie but shows it from the "bad guys" side. I have always wanted to create a film from the "bad guys" side. Another very interesting aspect of Reservoir Dogs is how it starts out with the end of the crime instead of laying it out from beginning to end. Within the movie you find out how everything happened instead of learning everything in the beginning like most films would do. There is many twists and turns which makes it a film that will always keep you entertained.

On his plans to study film at Sachem
I definitely plan on taking advantage of film classes at North. I have actually decided to not take lunch next year so I can take Career & Financial Management and Professional Photo and Video.
