July is Packed with Activities at Sachem Library
From outside concerts to discussion series and films, there is plenty to do.
Every month offers many wonderful programs at the Sachem Public Library, but now that the summer is here, the library will be utilizing its new Inside/Out Garden in full force, as well as taking advantage of the many programs it offers inside, as well.
Here's a look at what's happening in the month of July ...
American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity: Tuesday, July 6, 2:00 p.m.

Award-winning artist/educator Emilia Rabito Baer will demonstrate how changes in women's fashion from 1890 to the present have helped meet the needs of everyday living at Sachem Public Library on July 6 at 2:00 p.m. This program is coordinated with the costume exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Discover what today's clothing says about the world we live in. Ms. Rabito Baer will examine the evolution of dresses from floor length to mini-skirts and take a closer look at American women from the past, and how they have influenced the women of today.

Richard Murdocco, PhD, Stony Brook University Medical Center, will help you explore your feelings and develop closure and healing at Sachem Public Library on July 6 at 7:00 p.m. In this meeting Richard Murdocco, PhD, Stony Brook University Medical Center, will help you cope with the emotional stress of illness. Whether an illness affects you or a loved one, share your experiences and learn to put on the NEW you.
Inside/Out Garden Tour: Wednesday, July 7, 10:00 a.m.
Inside/Out Landscape Designer, Michael J. Opisso will conduct a tour of Sachem Library's new garden extension on July 7 at 10:00 a.m. The Sachem library garden was created to be educational as well as environmentally sensitive. Mr. Opisso will share his vision for the space and highlight features and focal points of the design.
How to Access and Enjoy Local Food: Wednesday, July 7, 7:00 p.m.
Sylvia Carter, writer of Newsday's column a la Carter, will show you how to find local and sustainable foods on Long Island at Sachem Public Library on July 7 at 7:00 p.m. Whether you have dietary concerns, are looking eat more healthfully or want to support Long Island agriculture, Sylvia Carter explains how you can find food that's raised locally and sustainably through farmer's markets, CSA's (community supported agriculture shares), local poultry farms and online sources of meat. You'll also learn how you can keep laying hens in your own backyard.
Six Gun: Friday, July 9, 7:00 p.m.
Six Gun is servin' up your kind of country at Sachem Public Library on July 9 at 7:00 p.m. The talented musicians of Six Gun have shared the stage with many of country music's top Nashville recording artists and record on CBS Records. Covering hits from the best artists Country has to offer, as well as offering a few original selections, this is one high-energy show you will not want to miss! Bring your lawn chairs. This performance will be held in Inside/Out, Sachem Library's new garden extension. The performance will take place indoors in the event of rain.
Opera & Art Film Series: Wednesday, July 14, 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Enjoy the best of opera and art in this monthly series at Sachem Public Library. This month's film, Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens, will be shown on July 14 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. This is an in-depth look at one of the most well-known photographers of the 21st century. From her childhood to her life at Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair, and her relationships throughout it all, this biographical account includes interviews with her subjects and Leibovitz herself. Simple and Healthy Tapas: Monday, July 19, 2:00 p.m.
Chef Jillian Dethuin will show you how to prepare tapas at Sachem Public Library on July 19 at 2:00 p.m. Add a twist to your next party menu: covering a healthy variety of hot and cold appetizers, tapas will bring color and flavor to any table. Chef Dethuin will share three delicious recipes: Edamole Crostinis with Corn/Kale Salsa; Summer Kebabs of Chicken Sausage/Roasted Cauliflower/Pickled Cucumber/Citrus Glaze and Fruit Confetti; and for dessert, Roasted Peach Napolean layered with sweet yogurt mousse.
Garden Thyme: Berry Patch: Monday, July 19,7:00 p.m.
It's time for the annual plant exchange during Garden Thyme at Sachem Public Library on July 19 at 7:00 p.m. What better way to share your gardening success than by sharing your garden! Vary your planting options by bringing your favorite plants to swap with other participants. Please pot or bag all seedlings, cuttings, perennials, small shrubs or tree seedlings. Label the plants you know and have the others identified. Show off photos of the full grown plants if you have them. Don't forget to bring a box in which to carry home your treasures.
Great Decisions Discussion Series: Global Financial Crisis: Monday, July 19, 7:00 p.m.
Sachem resident and long-time Great Decisions participant Peter Hanson, will lead this monthly discussion series of current global hot topics at Sachem Public Library on July 19 at 7:00 p.m. The recent global financial crisis has revealed major deficiencies in the regulation of markets and institutions. Emergency measures to prevent a full collapse of the global financial system have led to mixed results. How will governments and the world community respond to this challenge? Sachem resident and long-time Great Decisions participant Peter Hanson leads this monthly discussion of current global hot topics. Pick up the discussion copy at the Welcome Desk. Great Decisions, a national, civic-education program on U.S. foreign policy and international issues, is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association. Certified Professional Organizer Jennifer Ryan returns for a repeat presentation at Sachem Public Library on July 20 at 10:00 a.m. If you missed it the first time, here's your chance to learn simple ways to conquer your clutter, manage your time, organize your files and get past the excuses that prevent you from reclaiming your home or office.

Meet the Filmmaker: Marino Amoruso: Jackie Robinson: A Life Story: Wednesday, July 21, 6:30 p.m.
Long Island native, Marino Amoruso, will present his film, Jackie Robinson: A Life Story at Sachem Public Library on July 21 at 6:30 p.m. This critically acclaimed documentary presents a man of exceptional character, dignity and courage who changed the course of American social history. This footage features photos taken throughout Jackie Robinson's remarkable life, as well as interviews with teammates. Q&A with the filmmaker will follow the presentation. (2008, NR-1:00)
Book Discussion: Mansfield Park, Thursday, July 22, Noon
The Sachem Library Book Discussion Group led by Ursula Bennet will discuss, Mansfield Park by Jane Austen on July 22 at noon. A highly moralized romance of family fortunes, Mansfield Park is about power and powerlessness, about dependency and independence within the family. In many ways, it appears to continue where Pride and Prejudice left off. Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk. Everyone is welcome to join in on the conversation. The Devotions: Friday, July 23: 7:00 p.m.
The Devotions bring back the golden oldies in a performance to be held Inside/Out, the Sachem Public Library garden extension, on July 23 at 7:00 p.m. In a world full of imitations, The Devotions are a true original. Performing since 1960, the group is best known for its 1964 #3 Billboard Hit, Rip Van Winkle. The Devotions perform a crowd pleasing repertoire that will make everything old seem new again. If you are a fan of the Golden Oldies, this is one performance you won't want to miss! Bring your lawn chairs. This performance will be held in Inside/Out, Sachem Library's new garden extension. The performance will take place indoors in the event of rain.
The Dead Relatives Club: Enhancing Your Genealogy with Maps & GPS: Monday, July 26, 7:00 p.m.
Dig up your past with the Dead Relatives Club Genealogy Group at Sachem Public Library on the last Monday of each month. This month's gathering will be held on July 26 at 7:00 p.m. This month, learn how adding a GPS device to your toolkit can enhance your genealogical your research.
Verse in Person: Tuesday, July 27, 7:00 p.m.
Celebrate poetry at Sachem Public Library on the last Tuesday of each month. This month's reading will be held on July 27 at 7:00 p.m. Each month a guest poet presents a reading, after which the audience is encouraged to share original works at an open mic. This month's featured reader will be Gladys Henderson. Ms. Henderson is an award-winning poet who runs poetry workshops for Live Poets, based in Islip and The Poets Circle at the Graphic Eye in Port Washington. She also co-hosts a poetry reading venue at the Sonoma Café in Hauppague. Ms. Henderson's poems have been published in journals such as Robert Frost Participant Anthologies, Primal Sanities and PAUMANOK: Poetry and Pictures of Long Island. Special thanks to Jeanette Klimszewski and Mankh, members of the Performance Poets Association, for co-hosting this series.
Book Discussion: The Zookeeper's Wife, Wednesday, July 28, 7:00 p.m.
The Sachem Library Book Discussion Group led by Helen Harris will discuss, The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman on July 28 at 7:00 p.m. This book tells the remarkable WWII story of Jan Zabinski, the director of the Warsaw Zoo, and his wife, Antonina, who, with courage and coolheaded ingenuity, sheltered 300 Jews and Polish resisters in their villa, animal cages and sheds.Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk. Everyone is welcome to join in on the conversation. This group can be attended every month or individually as a particular title appeals to you.
