Man Fleeing Police Nearly Strikes Detective With Car: Police
K-9 officer Champ helped arrest the 30-year-old man who tried to flee on the LIE when police responded to his home early Tuesday.

HOLBROOK, NY – A 30-year-old man faces numerous charges after he tried to flee police, nearly striking a detective with his car early Tuesday in Holbrook, Nassau Police said.
Nassau County detectives responded to Daniel Heckman's home on Patchogue Holbrook Road to place him under arrested for violating a stay away order in Hicksville on Jan. 4, police said. Heckman also stole a 25-year-old woman's cellphone in Hicksville, according to police.
When police arrived at Heckman's home, he refused orders to stop and entered a 2017 Nissan Maxima, police said.

Heckman then maneuvered the vehicle to lurch forward, forcing a detective to jump out of the way to avoid being struck, police said.
According to police, Heckman then erratically backed out of the driveway and fled.

Detectives located Heckman on the LIE's North Service Road, but Heckman refused to pull over and entered the Long Island Expressway, police said.
The Suffolk County Police Department was notified and assisted in an attempt to stop the Heckman's car as he continued to drive westbound, committing many traffic violations, police said.
Heckman changed direction, continued to drive erratically and refused to stop until he drove back to his home, police said.
Heckman refused to exit his car even though the driver’s door was open and he reached toward the floor with his hand, police said. At that time K-9 officer Champ assisted in making the arrest as Heckman struggled with officers.
Heckman is charged with three counts of reckless endangerment, three counts of unlawful Fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, three counts of reckless driving, multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations. He also faces the the original charges of petit larceny and two counts of criminal contempt.
