Here are the top 3 stories today in Sachem:

  1. New mental health program will launch Monday. The Guide to Your Personal Resiliency Pack Program will educate people on mental health resiliency. The pandemic brought on high rates of mental health issues in Suffolk County and the county hopes this will give people the tools to combat their mental health issues. "Earlier this year, we partnered with a variety of mental health experts to provide vital information and coping mechanisms to veterans," County Executive Steve Ballone said. "Now we're proud to offer a more inclusive program to students and all community members." (Sachem Patch)
  2. Brookhaven Town Board approves new town lines, with controversy. The Town Board unanimously approved the new district lines Thursday night, but critics claim they separate minority communities. "I probably would have liked to even hear them say to not vote on it [Thursday]," Middle Island resident Shirley Singletary Hudson said. "Their minds were already made up and that's unfortunate." On the other hand, Coram Civic Association vice president Kareem Nugdalla is supportive of the district lines. "It is not a racist map or a map that looks to take away the voice of minority communities of color," he said. (Sachem Patch)
  3. Remnants of Hurricane Ian are expected to drench Long Island over the weekend. We can expect 2-3 inches of rain with the worst coming today. A high-pressure system with low pressure will also bring strong winds. "This action will lead to above-normal tides, coastal flooding, beach erosion and dangerous surf conditions from northeastern North Carolina to eastern Massachusetts," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said.
