HAUPPAUGE, NY — The Suffolk County Legislature has adopted the county's new legislative districts map, in which the populations remain equal and there are four reconfigured constituencies where ethnic minorities are in the majority, Newsday reported.

The districts include nine, which has parts of Brentwood, Bay Shore, and Islip; 15, which has parts of Wyandanch and North Amityville; 16, which has parts of Huntington Station, Elwood, Dix Hills, and Brentwood; and 17, which has parts of South Huntington, Deer Park, and North Bay Shore, according to the outlet.

The lines were created by a bipartisan panel after County Executive Steve Bellone vetoed maps proposed by the then-Democratic-controlled county legislature last year over concerns they would not hold up under a court challenge, the outlet reported.

The panel, which met numerous times over months before agreeing on the maps in September, as well as the maps, have been praised by Democrats and Republicans alike, according to the outlet.

Redistricting takes place every 10 years after the U.S. census is complete.
