CENTEREACH, NY — When animal lover and NYPD officer Walter Weaver fell in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, his family were devastated, but they were honored last Thursday as his colleagues remembered him at a special dedication and horse naming ceremony in the Bronx in which a police mounted unit was given his nickname of "Wally," Newsday reported.

The eight-year-old mustang will continue the legacy of Weaver, who was from Centereach, along with four other officers who were dedicated at the NYPD’s Remount School of Horsemanship in Pelham Bay Park, according to the outlet.

Weaver, 30, was a nine-year member of the force killed trying to save people trapped in an elevator on the 6th floor in the World Trade Center's north tower, but his remains were never found, the outlet reported.
