Options Thrift Shop to Reopen in Lake Ronkonkoma

Makes return to area after fire destroyed original shop three years ago.

Options for Community Living Thrift Shop will make its return to Lake Ronkonkoma Wednesday, Dec. 8.

More than three years ago, the shop closed because a fire destroyed most of the building. Located at 392 Hawkins Avenue, it has been completely renovated and is now handicapped accessible.

"Everyone has been waiting patiently for us to re-open," said Linda Longo, the shop's coordinator. "Our supporters have been very generous with donations and my volunteers are excited to return to work. We're just so happy to be back in the community and to reconnect with all of our customers again."

First opened in 1991, Options Thrift Shop provides the agency's program participants with disabilities an opportunity to volunteer and learn basic retail skills in a supportive environment.

According to a statement by the company, learning to operate a cash register, price items, design displays, and interact with customers are just some of the skills that are learned at the thrift shop. The shop is also a valuable resource for individuals and families in need of low-cost, gently used clothing, books, toys and household items.
