For Sachem residents, nothing is better than good food and a place to talk about their beloved Sachem sports. While the word Sachem has always been synonymous with great education, high quality sports teams, and a sense of community, residents now have another accomplishment to add to their list: great pizza.
Sachem Pizzeria opened five years ago in Holbrook, as a place where family and friends could gather to celebrate Sachem pride.
"My son Chris came up with the idea of calling it 'Sachem,' " said owner and manager Tony Iorio. "He was a Sachem wrestler and we've always been very involved in Sachem schools."

The idea behind the pizzeria was to "give something back" to the community which has given residents so much over the years.
According to Iorio, the Sachem schools know that they can contact Sachem Pizzeria "whenever they need something." The pizzeria makes pizzas and brings them to the various schools for different tournaments and games. Additionally, they sponsor a great deal of the fundraising which assists the teams in purchasing equipment for a variety of sports.

While the history and inspiration for Sachem Pizzeria is interesting, perhaps the best part of the experience is located right on the four walls of the building. Painted bright yellow, in honor of Sachem's traditional gold color, the establishment is neither North nor East directed. The walls are adorned with photos, jerseys and plaques from teams of both high schools, equally. The memorabilia is provided by both the schools and the parents of students on the various teams.
Sports such as wrestling, soccer and lacrosse transform the walls of Sachem Pizzeria into a local hotspot for family and friends.
With so much great history to examine, one quickly forgets that Sachem Pizzeria has an extensive menu from which to choose. Popular pizza choices include stuffed chicken, eggplant and baked ziti. In addition to creative pies, Sachem Pizzeria also offers a full variety of dinners and specialties.
Everything on the menu is Sachem-inspired, down to the very names of dishes. For instance, one could choose the "Sachem Special," consisting of veal and eggplant parmigiana, or one of the popular "Sachem Combos" which can be either meat or pasta centric. Reasonable prices round out the full menu that Sachem Pizzeria has to offer.
In addition, the pizzeria offers specials on dinner items from Monday through Thursday. Most notably, Wednesday night features veal parmigiana served with pasta or salad for only $13.95, and Thursday offers shrimp parmigiana at the same price.
Despite all of the wonderful choices, my guest and I chose to keep it simple, and sample a variety of the prepared pizzas. The regular Neopolitan slice was wonderful, as the dough was crisp and covered with just the right amount of cheese and sauce. The mushroom pizza offered a generous portion of sautéed mushrooms, and is sure to be a favorite of any veggie lover. Finally, the grandma slice was sampled, and thoroughly enjoyed by my guest for its great combination of cheese, sauce and just the right amount of spice.
It is clear that Sachem Pizzeria prides itself on high quality and a satisfying atmosphere. The pizzeria is recommended for anyone who enjoys good food and a true Sachem experience.
