🌱 Sachem Daily: Extra Policing At LI Schools + Memorial Day Travel

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sachem.

(Patch Media)

Hello, everybody. It's Thursday in Sachem and I'm back in your inbox with everything you need to know about what's happening in our community today.

First, today's weather:

An afternoon shower in spots. High: 68 low: 62.

Here are the top 3 stories in Sachem today:

  1. Long Island schools will have extra patrols by police through the end of the school year. "The Suffolk County Police Department offers its deepest condolences to the Robb Elementary School community, as well as the law enforcement officers who responded to the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison stated. "This tragic act of violence against children and school staff inside what should be a safe haven is unfathomable and a parent's worst nightmare. While there are currently no credible threats in Suffolk County, the department is monitoring the ongoing investigation and will be increasing patrols around school buildings out of an abundance of caution." Gov. Kathy Hochul announced shortly after this statement that the patrols would continue through the year. (Huntington Patch)
  2. Traveling for Memorial Day? Check out the best and worst times to hit the road this year. Travel is expected to be at pre-pandemic levels which means more traffic and delays. See how you should prepare by clicking the link! (Patch)
  3. ICYMI: New York State has canceled the U.S. History Regents exam due to the recent Buffalo mass shooting. NY officials were concerned a question on the exam had the potential to trigger student's trauma in regard to the recent shooting. The exam was created two years ago. "In the wake of the Buffalo tragedy, it is not appropriate to administer the exam with a question that could compound the grief and hardship faced by our school communities," said Emily DeSantis, spokesperson for the department.
