Sachem Grads Jerry Robinson and DJ Lazey Laze Hope to Make a Difference in the Music World

Have toured with well-known bands in their quest to make it big.

Sachem East graduates Jerry Robinson and DJ Lazey Laze have been living the life of hip-hop stars since their 2008 album debut, EP Hello Ford. They have since toured the with Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes, and Travie McCoy and say this is only the beginning.

Robinson, a Farmingville resident, known for his eccentric lyrics and vibrant flow, credits his success to the fans from their hometown of Sachem.

"[They] are the number one reason why we do what we do," the artist said with enthusiasm and affection in his voice towards those fans.

They saw it as an easy road to success by taking advantage of internet social networking websites. Since, they have earned their bragging rights from Myspace after being named one of the top 5 artists in New York.

At The Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale last week, Robinson performed for local fans after being on tour for a three weeks. His love affair with music is apparent when the artist steps on stage to give the fans what they came to see.

"I found a route that expresses my feelings and I think my audience really relates to the things I have to say," he easily explained as if it comes naturally. Being able to relate, is something his hometown fans enjoy the most about his music.

It's a more personal performance for Robinson at The Crazy Donkey. The audience was filled with fans that new his music from the beginning.

"It is almost like the love is something tangible the you could touch between the audience and I," he said.

Since his early days under the name, "X-ZEL," his style of music has surpassed limitations he said he never would have believed.

"We defiantly went a bit more main-stream than the last album to expose our music to a larger demographic," he said. After breaking down boundaries, he now has a more intense sense of innovation with his vocal ability. "This album came a lot more natural than the previous one," he continued.

The most inspiring thing about Jerry Robinson and DJ Lazey Laze is their open mind to every genre of music. They have worked with hip-hop artist Keith Murray, pop artist Shawayze, and pop rock group Panic! At The Disco. Inspirations come from The Beatles to Jay Z while the roots of their music vary from hip hop, jazz, blues, rock, and techno. To categorize their music, it would have to be an innovative mix of hip hop and alternative pop. The wide spread genre creates a wide spread audience and fan base.

"It was great to be with [Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes, Travie McCoy, along with other various artists] on the "SWSX" tour and exposing our music to a similar demographic," he said of the experience on tour. Robinson had a glimpse into the life he one day will have while touring the southern United States. He hopes they will have their first radio hit this year.

Robinson, 22, had his first studio experience at 8-years-old through a family member who was involved in the industry. It wasn't until age 12, when the graduate of Sachem fell in love with hip-hop and knew this was what he wanted to do as a career after high school.

DJ Lazey Laze has been involved with music since age 10, when he formally learned how to play the alto saxophone while at Sachem. Most of his music today has come from the Sachem Jazz Band. His curiosity allowed him to explore the world of music and music producing. He now plays guitar, bass, and piano as well.

"We are working on an upcoming project with super producer Jason Nevins, from Long Island as well," Robinson said. "We are extremely excited."

The Sachem duo has big plans for the rest of 2010. They will be releasing a single in September as well has launching a tour. His self-debut album Jerry Robinson will be coming soon. Jerry Robinson and DJ Lazey Laze will be performing at Mulcahy's, Centereach on Thursday, July 1.
