Sachem Public Library Budget Passed

Increases .8 percent; Diane Longo reelected to another term as trustee.

The Sachem Public Library budget vote passed by a landslide and Diane was Longo re-elected as a board trustee member Tuesday night.

Thanks to an increased turnout of 50 voters, the budget passed 342 to 106. The budget will be increased by .8 percent - the smallest increase in years.

Longo, a trustee for the past 10 years who ran unopposed, was re-elected for another five-year term. She grew up in the district and is apart of several community organizations, including the Sachem PTA.

"This year in particular we did try to keep [the budget] very low," she said. "At the same time we reevaluated some of the areas that we could concentrate more on."

"It is the smallest increase in recent memory," said Library Director Judith Willner. "It's really our bread and butter for the year."

She explained the budget pays for employee's salaries, up keep, maintenance, new books, and events throughout the year. The library is increasing in popularity and is in need for more books, room, and resources to accommodate everyone.

"[Longo] has her finger on the pulse of the community, on the pulse of the people and what their needs are," Willner said. "At the same time, she is sensitive to the needs of the staff."

The board plans on adding more programs for the public while continuing to provide the services currently offered. Many residents of the area rely on the library for recreational time, research, and learning opportunities.

"[Library tax] is the most bang for your buck," said Dennis Flavin, a trustee on the board. "The library is the root of the community. It services people from birth to death. When economic times are hard, everyone comes to their library because it's inexpensive and the services we provide are phenomenal."
