Sachem Public Library has Packed April In-Store

Offers plenty of events to keep community busy.

As usual, the Sachem Public Library is offering a slew of events to get involved with during the month of April …

April 2010 Gallery Exhibit: Donna G, Long Island Landscapes: Nature Preserves, Hidden Doorways and Trails to Nowhere

Donna G will exhibit her original acrylic paintings at Sachem Public Library during the month of April in the Gallery located in the Lower Lobby. Pissarro and Van Gogh along with the dark, emotional pieces of Munch have influenced Donna G's work, but her biggest inspiration has been Mother Nature. Donna has been Artist of the Week on WLIW Channel 21's award winning cultural arts show, Ticket, and cover artist for the Huntington based cultural arts magazine, Canvas. In addition to the main gallery, the display case will exhibit uniquely crafted Pysanky Eggs created by Chris Mulholland.

The Art Encounter: Wednesdays. 11:00 a.m.

Strengthen your creative skills in The Art Encounter at Sachem Public Library weekly on Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Do you have a desire to fulfill your passion for art? Artist Jack Dean leads this weekly gathering of art enthusiasts. Work in your favorite media, share ideas and learn new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Bring your supplies and a work-in-progress, or start something new and have fun as you allow your creative energy to flow!

An Introduction to The Great Courses: 

Experience the adventure of learning without the exams at Sachem Public Library beginning on April 5 at 7:00 p.m.  This series of courses on DVD is presented by award winning college professors. Topics covered include: literature, philosophy, history, fine arts, the sciences, economics, and religion. In this, the second of three DVD viewings, The Physics of History will be shown. Professor David J. Helfand's course for non-science majors treats the atom as a tool for revealing the quantitative history of everything from the human diet and works of art to Earth's climate and the universe.

One Man's Mythology: A Poetic Contemplative Journey: Tuesday April 6, 2:30 p.m.

The film One Man's Mythology: a poetic contemplative journey will be shown at Sachem Public Library on April 6 at 2:30 p.m. Written and performed by Long Island writer Mankh (Walter E. Harris III), this dramatized reading of ten poems is portrayed on film with a Cinéma vérité style. Poetic text will be presented on screen while a lush soundscape of contemplative music by renowned violinist/composer Anna Schaad will provide a complimentary background. Mankh and videographer/editor Michael Mart will be on hand to share their inspiration and answer questions about the project. DVDs will be available for purchase.

Garage Sales for Fun and Profit: Wednesday, April 7, 7:00 p.m.

Lucille Forgione-Hoell shares the secrets to holding successful garage sales at Sachem Public Library on April 7 at 7:00 p.m. Clear your home of items you no longer use, make money, and have fun! Ms. Forgione-Hoell has successfully held her own annual garage sales for over 18 years, and has organized her neighborhood's sales for over 15 years.

Sax in the Stacks with Sergei: Sunday, April 11, 2:00 p.m.

Enjoy the powerful sound of the saxophone in a performance by Sergei Gurbeloshvili at Sachem Public Library on April 11 at 2:00 p.m. A graduate of Gnesins Music Institute, Moscow, in both jazz and classical saxophone studies, Mr. Gurbeloshvili boasts over twenty albums of instrumental jazz and pop music. He performs jazz, blues, pop, Brazilian, ethnic, and classical music with leading musicians around the world.

Music through the Ages: Classical Music of the 20th Century: Monday, April 12, 7:00 p.m.

Sally Shorrock will provide an audio/visual tour through a century of classical music at Sachem Public Library on April 12 at 7:00 p.m. This music history lecture will focus on a dazzling and unique era – the 20th century. Discover the elegance of Ravel and Debussy, the inspiration of Copland and the eclectic, post-modern styles by composers from the latter half of the century including Long Island's own Lucas Foss, and New York City native Phillip Glass.

Kayaking on Long Island: Tuesday, April 13, 7:00 p.m.

Discover the joy of kayaking in a basics presentation by Nick DeNezzo at Sachem Public Library on April 13 at 7:00 p.m. Mr. DeNezzo, a member of the Long Island Kayaking Club, will talk about the different types of kayaks and how to find the right one for you, as well as basic equipment, beginner strokes, and where to kayak on our beautiful island.

12 Angry Jurors: Friday, April 16, 6:30 p.m.

Second Chance Players will present a live theatrical performance of the play 12 Angry Jurors at Sachem Public Library on April 16 at 6:30 p.m. Eleven jurors have agreed that a murder defendant is guilty. Can one lone juror convince the others that "beyond a shadow of a doubt" must be considered before returning to the courtroom?

Romance Writers: Saturday, April 17, 1:00 p.m.

Illustrator Jeff Menges will discuss cover design in publication at Sachem Public Library April 17 at 1:00 p.m. Like it or not, many people do judge a book by its cover. Mr. Menges will share with you the effect of a cover on a novel's presentation and the process by which a cover is designed.

Great Decisions Discussion Series:

Kenya and R2P: Monday, April 19, 7:00 p.m.

Sachem resident and long-time Great Decisions participant Peter Hanson, will lead this monthly discussion series of current global hot topics at Sachem Public Library on April 19 at 7:00 p.m. Post-election rioting in Kenya in 2007 brought pressure on Nairobi, from international and regional diplomats, to end tensions and avert bloodshed on a massive scale. What lessons can be learned from the intervention in Kenya? What does it mean for the UN's emerging "responsibility to protect" doctrine? Sachem resident and long-time Great Decisions participant Peter Hanson will lead this monthly discussion series of current global hot topics. Pick up the discussion copy at the Welcome Desk. Great Decisions, a national, civic-education program on U.S. foreign policy and international issues, is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association. Six Travel Tips for Staying Put: Tuesday, April 20, 7:00 p.m.

Vivian Swift will discuss the trials and rewards of living a creative life in the suburbs and offer advice on being a tourist in your own town in a multi-media program at Sachem Public Library on April 20 at noon. Ms. Swift decided to stay put on Long Island after traveling across the globe for twenty years. Calling herself an expert in "staying put," Ms. Swift's book, When Wanderers Cease to Roam, offers advice for travelers and writers alike. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Eat Healthy and Learn to Reduce Stress on Your Body

Wednesday, April 21, 7:00 p.m.

Certified Nutritional Counselor Anne Marie Lisa will present tips for healthy living at Sachem Public Library on April 21 at 7:00 p.m. Ms. Lisa will discuss how to strengthen your immune system, lower your LDL, stabilize high blood sugar levels associated with Type II Diabetes, promote weight loss and eliminate mood swings. Learn what inflammation is and why it contributes to conditions such as allergies, joint pain, arthritis, colitis, asthma and weight gain. Ms. Lisa will also review vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and the role they play in keeping you healthy.

Book Discussion:

The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey

Thursday, April 22 at Noon or Wednesday, April 28 at 7:00pm

The Sachem Library Book Discussion Group led by Ursula Bennet will discuss, The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey, by Candice Millard on April 22 at noon and again on April 28 at 7:00 p.m. This discussion is part of the Long Island Reads: One Island, One Book program. Long Island Reads is an Island-wide reading initiative. Each spring people in Nassau and Suffolk counties come together to read and discuss a specific book selection. During National Library Week, April 11-17, join readers throughout Long Island in reading this year's selection. The River of Doubt tells the tale of a mostly forgotten episode in Roosevelt's eventful life in which he struggles to overcome deadly rapids, Indian attacks, disease, and starvation on a harrowing trek down an uncharted tributary of the Amazon River. Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk. Everyone is welcome to join in on the conversation. This group can be attended every month or individually as a particular title appeals to you.

Bring along one item of jewelry and a verbal evaluation will be given.

America's Crisis: Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War: Monday, April 26, 3:00 p.m.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, you are invited to attend a book discussion series to be held at the Sachem Public Library through June, 2010. This month's book, The Battle of the Wilderness, May 5-6, 1864 by Gordon C. Rhea, will be discussed on April 26 at 3:00 p.m.  Two days of close-quarters fighting in dense Virginia woodland ignited the famous rivalry between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. Combining official histories with diaries and letters, this account describes in detail the drama of this well matched battle of the early Civil War. Lawn Maintenance 101: Monday, April 26 7:00 p.m.

John Miller will share tips on lawn maintenance at Sachem Public Library on Monday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Miller will tell you all you need to know about the care and feeding of turf grass, the proper time to fertilize and the use of the correct fertilizer. Learn about different types of cool weather grasses, how to water, the best tools for the job, and how to deal with insects and turf grass diseases.

GENEALOGY 101: The Dead Relatives Club

Family Tree Maker 2010: Monday, April 26, 7:00 p.m.

Dig up your past with the Dead Relatives Club Genealogy Group at Sachem Public Library on the last Monday of each month. This month's gathering will be held on Monday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m. This month we will focus on a review of Family Tree Maker 2010.  It's new, but is it improved? Before updating to the 2010 version of this popular family-tree-building software, join us for a look at what's changed, what's stayed the same and what's still a problem.

Katherine Dlugolonski presents the recipe for a successful Mother's Day Brunch at Sachem Public Library on April 27 at 6:30 p.m. Celebrate the moms in your life with a delicious Mother's Day Brunch. Katherine Dlugolonski will show you how to prepare foods to please everyone, including eggs, sausages and breakfast breads. Champagne not included!

Verse in Person: Tuesday, April 27, 7:00 p.m.

Celebrate poetry at Sachem Public Library on the last Tuesday of each month. This month's reading will be held on Tuesday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m. Each month a guest poet presents a reading after which the audience is encouraged to share original works at an open mic. This month's featured reader is Russell Cameron Perry. Mr. Perry is an engineer, inventor, photographer, poet, wood craftsman, naturalist, and metaphysical philosopher, living in Nissequogue. He has been published in several journals. His love of nature leads him to Nature Conservancy sites all over the Island, to comb their beaches, to fish and clam, and paddle his kayak in rivers, bays, and harbors. Special thanks to Jeanette Klimszewski and Mankh, members of the Performance Poets Association, for co-hosting this series.

Mambo Dance Lesson: Friday, April 30, 7:30 p.m.

Let Victor Goldman and Carolyn Schwartz set your feet to music at Sachem Public Library on April 30 at 7:30 p.m. The original Salsa, the Mambo was developed in Cuba and moves to a fusion of Swing and Cuban music. Bring a partner or come alone and learn the steps to this very popular dance.
