From Art Galleries to Academy Award Concerts, the Library Calendar is Full.
In March, the Sachem Public Library will offer many interesting exhibits. Take a look at what's going on:

Joan Catz-Wurtzel will exhibit a selection of photographs at Sachem Public Library during the month of March in the Gallery located in the Lower Lobby.
Ms. Wurtzel reaches for her camera on a daily basis, taking photos that capture and prolong the pleasure that certain scenes, visions and experiences render. When Joan observes something that amazes her, she takes possession with her camera. Known around town as the "hat lady," this long-time member of Sachem Public Library considers her library "a home away from home."

In addition to the main gallery, the display case will exhibit one of a kind, uniquely crafted watercolor jewelry by Ross Barbera.
The Art Encounter:
Strengthen your creative skills in The Art Encounter at Sachem Public Library weekly on Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Do you have a desire to fulfill your passion for art? Artist Jack Dean leads this weekly gathering of art enthusiasts. Work in your favorite media, share ideas and learn new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Bring your supplies and a work-in-progress, or start something new and have fun as you allow your creative energy to flow!
What's New for Homes: Saturday, March 6, Noon
Handyman, electrical engineer and former home inspector, Lou Cialdella, shares DIY know-how at Sachem Public Library on March 6 at noon.
Mr. Cialdella will help you make the most of fixing up your home with tips on home maintenance techniques, paints and tiles, and the latest in solar energy. Save money and learn about new products for your home.
Bizet's Carmen Lecture: Tuesday, March 9, 7:00 p.m.
Sally Shorrock will acquaint you with the spectacular background stories of Bizet's fiery opera, Carmen, at Sachem Public Library on March 9 at 7:00 p.m.
Learn about the naughtiest gypsy of all time and the trials she encounters when she meets her match in Escamillo, the charismatic and glamorous toreador. This groundbreaking drama is one of the most driving operas of all time, leaving you on the edge of your seat and humming all the way home. Carmen is a fantastic opera for first timers.
Bizet's Carmen will be shown at the Library on March 10 at 1:30 and 6:00 p.m.
Opera & Art Film Series: Wednesday, March 10, 1:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Enjoy the best of opera and art in this monthly series at Sachem Public Library. This month's film, Bizet's Carmen, will be shown on March 10 at 1:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
In 19th century Seville, the lusty, tempestuous Carmen seduces a naïve Army corporal, Don Jose in this tale of love, betrayal and murder. Starring Placido Domingo and Julia Migenes-Johnson, conducted by Lorin Maazel. In French with English subtitles. (1984, NR-2:35)

Academy Award Winning Songs: Sunday, March 14, 2:00 p.m.
Singer-pianist-arranger, bandleader and veteran entertainer Mitch Kahn will perform at Sachem Public Library on March 14 at 2:00 p.m.
In this performance Mr. Kahn will explore the Academy Award winning legacy of the great American Songwriters with material from the 30s to the 80s. This concert is packed with music, nostalgia and anecdotes about the singers, actors and composers. Preferred seating will be given to Sachem Library cardholders at Sunday concerts and performances.
Irish Tea: Tuesday, March 16 or Monday, March 29, 6:30 p.m.
Barbara Sheridan will show you how to coordinate a delightful Irish tea at Sachem Public Library on your choice of March 16 or March 29 at 6:30 p.m.
During this demonstration you will learn how to create tea sandwiches, scones and a dipsy trifle, all of which you can sample during the evening.
Meet the Filmmaker: Marino Amoruso
Mickey Mantle: In His Own Words, Wednesday, March 17, 7:00 p.m.
Long Island native, Marino Amoruso, will present his film, Mickey Mantle: In His Own Words at Sachem Public Library on March 17 at 7:00 p.m.
In this critically-acclaimed film Mickey himself tells the story of his remarkable life and career in two on-camera interviews conducted a few years before his death. Special guest stars include Yogi Berra, Hank Bauer, Ryne Duren, Johnny Blanchard, Carl Erskine, Tommy Byrne and others. Q&A with the filmmaker will follow the presentation.
A Taste of Ireland: Sunday, March 21, 2:00 p.m.
Celebrate Irish Heritage with baritone James Hanrahan, pianist Wally Alesse and the Mulvihill-Lynch Studio Irish Step Dancers at Sachem Public Library on March 21 at 2:00 p.m.
James Hanrahan, an internationally acclaimed veteran of opera, concert and Broadway theatre, will regale you with a variety of traditional Irish songs. Mr. Hanrahan will be accompanied by pianist Wally Alesse, who has performed with renowned bands including the Guy Lombardo Orchestra.
What Irish celebration would be complete without step dancing? Performers from the Mulvihill-Lynch Studio of Irish Dance will execute intricate and unmistakably classic Irish dance. These amazing dancers are regionally, nationally and internationally known champions on the competitive circuit and have performed on Fox Channel 5's Good Day New York morning show. Preferred seating will be given to Sachem Library cardholders at Sunday concerts and performances.
Book Discussion Series
America's Crisis: Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War: Monday, March 22, 3:00 p.m.
To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, you are invited to attend a book discussion series to be held at the Sachem Public Library from September, 2009 through June, 2010. This month's book, Lincoln at Gettysburg: The Words That Remade America by Garry Wills, will be discussed on March 22 at 3:00 p.m.
Garry Wills, a former professor of Greek at Yale University, painstakingly deconstructs Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and discovers heavy influence from the early Greeks and 19th century Transcendentalists.

Dig up your past with the Dead Relatives Club Genealogy Group at Sachem Public Library on the last Monday of each month. This month's gathering will be held on Monday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m.
This month, expand your research options with a list of the 60 most worthwhile websites for genealogists.
Genealogists of all levels can benefit from the Library's collection of biography and genealogy databases. Whether you choose to research in the Library or from home, you'll find invaluable information on historical records from well known services such as Footnote and Heritage Quest. You can access these and other research databases at www.sachemlibrary.org using the Research Tools link. You will need to enter your library card barcode; select Suffolk e-Resources, then Biography & Genealogy.
Computers located near the Reference Desk provide free access to the popular family tree research service, Ancestry.com for in-Library use only. Speak with a Reference Librarian for more information.
Great Decisions Discussion Series: Special Envoys: Monday, March 22, 7:00 p.m.
Sachem resident and long-time Great Decisions participant Peter Hanson, will lead this monthly discussion series of current global hot topics at Sachem Public Library on March 22 at 7:00 p.m.
Special envoys can help bring attention and diplomatic muscle to resolve conflicts and global challenges, but they also bring with them their own "special" problems. Will the Administration's reliance on special envoys increase the ability of the U.S. to deal with major international issues? Great Decisions, a national, civic-education program on U.S. foreign policy and international issues, is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association.

13 Legends of Fire Island: Tuesday, March 23, 7:00 p.m.
Long Island resident and history buff Jack Whitehouse will share stories of mystery and suspense taken from his book, 13 Legends of Fire Island and the Great South Bay at Sachem Public Library on March 23 at 7:00 p.m.
Mr. Whitehouse will highlight legends and lore relating to pirates, ghosts, shipwrecks and treasure chests, and even the possibility of the Viking discovery of Fire Island. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

The Precisions: Sunday, March 28, 2:00 p.m.
The Precisions return for another amazing performance at Sachem Public Library on March 28 at 2:00 p.m.
Like other popular vocal groups from the golden era of rock n' roll, The Precisions graduated from performing as young balladeers on Brooklyn street corners to a major record label. Renowned as one of the classic East Coast Doo Wop groups, The Precisions have entertained audiences coast-to-coast with their rich, smooth harmony, and foot stomping rhythm. Selections for this concert will include some of the group's biggest hits, including Someone to Watch Over Me and Cleopatra. Preferred seating will be given to Sachem Library cardholders at Sunday concerts and performances.
Verse in Person: Tuesday, March 30, 7:00 p.m.
Celebrate poetry at Sachem Public Library on the last Tuesday of each month. This month's reading will be held on Tuesday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m.
Each month a guest poet presents a reading after which the audience is encouraged to share original works at an open mic. This month's featured reader is Long Island poet Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan. Ms. Morgan is the first female and current, Suffolk County Poet Laureate and founder/president of The North Sea Poetry Scene (TNSPS). In 2006 her poetry book, Let Me Tell You Something was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. She is the 2009 recipient of the Long Island Writers' Guild Community Service Award. She is editor of Long Island Sounds and host of TNSPS's Arts Forum television show. Her latest book is For Michael. Currently, Ms. Morgan is endeavoring to create an archival/arts center for Long Island poetry. Special thanks to Jeanette Klimszewski and Mankh, members of the Performance Poets Association, for co-hosting this series.
Hotel du Lac: Wednesday, March 24, 7:00 p.m.
The Sachem Library Book Discussion Group led by Helen Harris will be discussing, Hotel du Lac, by Anita Brookner on March 24 at 7:00 p.m.
During her stay at a stately Swiss hotel a British novelist, desiring to find refuge from love, becomes preoccupied with fellow guests each with his or her own tale to tell. She ultimately struggles to come to terms with her career and love: the lack, the benefits, and the meaning thereof.
