(Patch Media)

Hello all. I'm back with your new copy of the Sachem Daily. Let's get this weekend started off right with a quick guide to the most important things happening in town these days, including updates on...

  • U.S. Soccer player and Lake Grove native holds meet and greet at the Village Idiot.
  • Money scammed from older adult intercepted in Ronkonkoma.
  • Sachem lunch aid honored from saving student who was choking.

But first, today's weather:

Mostly sunny; winds subsiding. High: 44 low: 26.

Here are the top four stories in Sachem today:

  1. U.S. Soccer player and Lake Grove native holds meet and greet at the Village Idiot. Joe Scally just returned home from the World Cup and was met by dozens of fans, mostly children, to sign autographs and take pictures. The line stretched along the block and it was a packed house to see Scally. (Patch)
  2. Money scammed from an older adult was intercepted in Ronkonkoma. The nearly $10,000 was sent from a Louisiana man as part of a Norton Anti-Virus scam and was headed to a location in Bay Shore. Police would not say where the money was going or where it was intercepted. (Sachem Patch)
  3. A Sachem lunch aid was honored for saving a student who was choking. Hiawatha Elementary School staff member Jennifer Campanelli performed the Heimlich maneuver on a student who was choking while lining up for lunch. Campanelli was honored for her life-saving efforts at the Dec. 14 meeting of the Sachem Central School District Board of Education, according to officials. (Sachem Patch)
  4. A weekend weather report brings cold temperatures but sunny skies. Expect to wear your heavy winter coat this weekend as temperatures will be in the upper 30s to low 40s. The good news is no snow is forecasted until Friday. (Weather.com)

Today in Sachem:

  • Holiday Candy Mug Gift Workshop: Grades 4 and up - Brookhaven Free Library. (11 a.m.)
  • Saturday Social at Cafe Castello: Adults 18 and up. (11:30 a.m.)
  • The Nutcracker Act II - The Ballet Center. (1 p.m.)

From my notebook:

  • Sachem Schools: "Students at Cayuga Elementary School are supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation this holiday season. Through a schoolwide effort led by teacher Tina-Marie Mikos, students wrote down their wishes for children with illnesses. They dropped their letters in a special mailbox located in the building's lobby. For each letter that is received, Macy's will make a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation." (Facebook)
