25-Foot Dead Whale Washes Up on Fire Island Beach

The whale was discovered Monday night, police say.

A 25-foot dead whale was discovered washed up along the Fire Island shore Monday night.

Suffolk Police were called at 8:30 p.m. and the Marine Bureau responded to the beach in Ocean Ridge, just east of Davis Park.

Police notified the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, which will handle the burial of the whale at the location where it washed up, police said.

The whale’s cause of death has not been determined, police said.
