Bayport-Blue Point Students Bring Fairytale Fun To Stage With ‘Shrek Jr.’

Students brought the kingdom of Far Far Away to life during three sold-out performances.

BAYPORT-BLUE POINT, NY — James Wilson Young Middle School students transported audiences to the kingdom of Far Far Away with a sold-out production of “Shrek Jr. the Musical” on May 29 and 30.

The production featured the school’s largest cast in years, with 63 student performers and 15 stage crew members bringing the beloved story to life. Students began rehearsing on March 11.

The musical was directed by Teresa Lovito, with Kathleen Conklin serving as musical director and Bailey Whitney as choreographer.

Based on the hit animated film, “Shrek Jr. the Musical” follows the lovable ogre Shrek as he embarks on an unexpected adventure alongside a group of fairy tale characters. The story highlights unlikely friendships, acceptance and the importance of embracing who you are.

The show featured comedy, heartfelt moments and energetic musical numbers as students put their own spin on the familiar story.

“Being able to tell their version of this well-known story to a community that’s so supportive is exciting,” Lovito said. “We’ve sold out all three shows.”

Conklin said the cast and crew built a strong connection throughout the rehearsal process.

“We created a beautiful family in our ‘Far Far Away,’ and I hope that they continue to explore their imaginations and the magical world of theater,” Conklin said.
