Bayport Resident Continues Track Achievements at Ithaca College

Alec Svoboda attains track and field accomplishments at state conference.

The Ithaca College men's track & field team recently competed a pair of decathletes at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Multi.

At the end of the first day of competitions senior Alec Svoboda, a Bayport resident and B-BP graduate, was third out of 20 participants with 3,157 points.

Svoboda clocked an 11.94 finish in the 100-meter dash to open competition before jumping 6.28 meters in the long jump, throwing 11.34 meters in the shot put, clearing 1.81 meters in the high jump and closing out the day with a 53.90 finish in the 400 dash.
 
While competiting for Bayport-Blue Point in 2010-2011, Svoboda competed in 18 events as a sophomore earning All-ECAC and All-NYSCTC indoor and outdoor honors in the pentathlon and decathlon, respectively.

He also finished fifth in the long jump at the state meet outdoors earning All-NYSCTC accolades. His indoor season-best performances included 2:47.89 in the 1,000-meter run, 8.66 in the 55 hurdles, 9.30 in the 60 hurdles, 1.78 meters in the high jump, 6.04 meters in the long jump, 10.77 meters in the shot put and 3,167 points in the pentathlon, while outdoors his season-highs were 12.13 in the 100 dash, 54.36 in the 400, 4:38.26 in the 1,500, 17.20 in the 110 hurdles, 1.78 meters in the high jump, 3.45 meters in the pole vault, 6.39 meters in the long jump, 10.90 meters in the shot put, 31.86 meters in the discus, 43.32 meters in the javelin and 5,557 points in the decathlon.

During the indoor season of his freshman year, Svoboda competed in eight events. He set season-best marks of 2,953 points in the pentathlon, 9.06 in the 55-meter hurdles, 9.72 in the 60 hurdles, 1:33.17 in the 600 run, 2:53.94 in the 1,000 run, 1.78 meters in the high jump, 5.91 meters in the long jump and 10.25 meters in the shot put. Outdoors, he was fifth at the state meet in the decathlon and also earned All-NYSCTC honors with a seventh-place long jump finish. Svoboda competed in five track events, six track events and the decathlon in the spring recording season-bests of 12.64 in the 100, 25.96 in the 200, 55.32 in the 400, 4:47.47 in the 1,500, 18.34 in the 110 hurdles, 1.69 meters in the high jump, 2.71 meters in the pole vault, 6.17 meters in the long jump, 9.27 meters in the shot put, 27.45 meters in the discus, 43.93 meters in the javelin and 4,869 points in the decathlon.

The 2009 graduate of Bayport-Blue Point was coached by Mike Zafonte. He earned four varsity letters in track & field was named to the all-county and all-state teams.

A biochemistry major, he is the son of Alan and Satu Svoboda.
