B-BP Girls Track Boasts Record-Setting, State Champ Legacy

Wicked weather that crunched two days of competition into one didn't deter Phantoms.

On Saturday June 8, the Bayport-Blue Point Girls Track and Field team competed in the New York State Championship meet.  The meet should have taken place over two days but due to rain and a terrible weather forecast on Friday, the meet was condensed into one day.

This did not deter the girls from competing and they contested all events that they had planned.  Even the pentathlon (5 events over two days:  100 meter hurdles, shot put, high jump, long jump and 800 meter run) was squeezed into one day.

Freshman Lauren Hansen made her first trip upstate in the shot put and equaled her seed in competition.  Senior Casey Hasher ran in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles and took sixth place earning All-State honors for division two (small schools).

Kerri Nickel, a junior who has only been doing track for three months, took sixth and was All-State for the pentathlon.  Senior Katie Saroka ran to a season best time in the 2000 meter steeplechase and took eighth place.  In the pole vault, Shelby Wertz cleared eight feet and then had three good attempts at what would have been a PR height of nine feet but was unsuccessful in clearing.

The day ended with the relays as Courtney Dooley (11th), Taylor Darby (10th), Rebecca Muschio (12th) and Katie Saroka (12th) ran the 4x800 meter relay.  The team ran to a great time of 9:43 and just missed All-State honors taking 7th place.

In the last event of the day, the girls 4x400 meter relay team of Kathleen Cibuls (9th), Courtney Dooley (11th and coming off of just running the 4x800), Sam Triani (12th) and Casey Hasher (12th) ran to a season best time and the second fastest in school history of 3:58.69.  The girls won their heat and took 3rd place overall and became All-State athletes.

The girls graduating this year leave behind quite a legacy.  BBP went three straight years of being undefeated League and County Champions,  had 11 All-State athletes, 5 state champions and broke 9 school records.
